About the tides at Chesapeake Beach
This is a mixed-tide station. Some days bring a deep low and a shallow low, and a few days have only one of each. The pattern follows the reference station at Baltimore, Fort McHenry, Patapsco River. The mean range is small, about 0.9 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. That is smaller than most Maryland stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 25, with a range of 1.4 ft. Neap tides follow on October 20, when the range shrinks to 0.4 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 1.9 ft on July 4, and the lowest is −0.7 ft on January 22.
Chesapeake Beach is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Baltimore, Fort McHenry, Patapsco River: highs come about 167 min and lows about 185 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1972 to 1987 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Rose Haven, 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 10 min later.
