About the tides at Dunn Sound

This is a mixed-tide station. Some days bring a deep low and a shallow low, and a few days have only one of each. The pattern follows the reference station at Springmaid Pier, Atlantic Ocean. The average range is about 4.7 ft. Spring tides add a little more at both ends. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 5.2 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 6.5 ft. Neap tides follow on Monday, when the range shrinks to 3.4 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 6.4 ft on October 1, and the lowest is −1.2 ft on January 23.

Dunn Sound is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Springmaid Pier, Atlantic Ocean: highs come about 25 min and lows about 40 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1974 to 1976 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Dunn Sound, Little River Inlet, 0.6 mi away, where high tide comes about 10 min earlier.
