About the tides at Snake Island
Expect two roughly equal high tides a day at Stono River, each arriving about 50 minutes later than the day before. The pattern follows the reference station at Charleston, Cooper River Entrance. The range is large, about 5.3 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 5.8 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 7.0 ft. Neap tides follow on Sunday, when the range shrinks to 3.9 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 7.0 ft on October 1, and the lowest is −1.5 ft on January 23.
Snake Island is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Charleston, Cooper River Entrance: highs come about 1 min later and lows about 12 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1978 to 1979 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Abbapoola Creek entrance, 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 16 min later.
