About the tides at Tilghman Island
Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 0.5 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at Baltimore, Fort McHenry, Patapsco River. The mean range is small, about 1.0 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 1.8 ft. Neap tides follow on Tuesday, when the range shrinks to 0.5 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 2.1 ft on July 4, and the lowest is −0.7 ft on January 22.
Tilghman Island is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Baltimore, Fort McHenry, Patapsco River: highs come about 153 min and lows about 162 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1983 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Poplar Island, 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 7 min later.
