About the tides at Wilmington Beach
Wilmington Beach has a mixed tide. The two daily highs, and especially the two lows, can differ a lot in height. The pattern follows the reference station at Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier. The average range is about 4.2 ft. Spring tides add a little more at both ends. That is larger than most North Carolina stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 4.7 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 6.4 ft. Neap tides follow today, when the range shrinks to 3.3 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 6.3 ft on November 25, and the lowest is −1.2 ft on January 23.
Wilmington Beach is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier: highs come about 18 min and lows about 10 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1977 to 1979 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Sunny Point Army Base, 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 1 h 5 m later.
