About the tides at Chilkat Inlet

Chilkat Inlet has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. Chilkat Inlet sees a mean range of about 13.9 ft. Low tide can expose a wide area, and the return is fast. That is larger than most Alaska stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 16.5 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 22.5 ft, comes on October 27, and the smallest, 9.0 ft, today. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 19.6 ft on November 25 and bottom out at −4.0 ft on December 24.

Predictions for Chilkat Inlet come from this station's own tide records. There is no live sensor, so the table shows forecast only. NOAA measured the tide here in 1998 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Haines Inlet, 4 mi away, where high tide comes about 9 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Battery Point, Chilkoot Inlet.
