About the tides at Great River
Great River has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Sandy Hook. The mean range is small, about 0.7 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. That is smaller than most New York stations on this site. The next spring tides peak today, with a range of 0.9 ft. Neap tides follow on October 18, when the range shrinks to 0.4 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 1.0 ft on August 2, and the lowest is −0.2 ft on January 23.
Great River is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Sandy Hook: highs come about 199 min and lows about 212 min later than there. The nearest other station is Bay Shore, 5 mi away, where high tide comes about 1 h 4 m earlier. For tidal currents, see Fire I. Inlet, 0.5 mi. S of Oak Beach.
Predictions are based on Sandy Hook.
