About the tides at Holland Island Bar Light

Holland Island Bar Light has a mixed tide. The two daily highs, and especially the two lows, can differ a lot in height. The pattern follows the reference station at Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The mean range is small, about 1.3 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 2.1 ft. Neap tides follow today, when the range shrinks to 0.9 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 2.1 ft on October 27, and the lowest is −0.5 ft on January 23.

Holland Island Bar Light is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel: highs come about 316 min and lows about 330 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1981 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Ewell, 6 mi away, where high tide comes about 22 min earlier.
