About the tides at Providence

Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 0.4 ft. On a typical day the water moves about 4.4 ft between high and low. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 4.8 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 5.5 ft, comes on Sunday, and the smallest, 2.4 ft, on October 19. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 6.0 ft on September 2 and bottom out at −1.0 ft on January 23.

A live NOAA gauge measures the water here, and predictions are calculated from this station's own records. It also reports water temperature, wind and air pressure. It was established in 1938. The nearest other station is Rumford, 3 mi away. For tidal currents, see Providence River, Fox Point Reach.
