About the tides at Salem Canal entrance
Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 0.6 ft. The pattern follows the reference station at Reedy Point, C&d Canal. The range is large, about 5.0 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. That is larger than most New Jersey stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 6.1 ft. Neap tides follow on Sunday, when the range shrinks to 4.5 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 6.7 ft on August 3, and the lowest is −0.8 ft on January 24.
Salem Canal entrance is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Reedy Point, C&d Canal: highs come about 36 min and lows about 52 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1977 to 1983 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Wilmington Marine Terminal, 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 14 min later. For tidal currents, see Deepwater Point, 0.5 nm NW of.
Predictions are based on Reedy Point, C&d Canal.
