About the tides at Cocoanut Key
Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 0.3 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at Key West. The mean range is small, about 0.7 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. That is smaller than most Florida stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 1.2 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 1.4 ft. Neap tides follow today, when the range shrinks to 0.6 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 1.4 ft on October 28, and the lowest is −0.4 ft on January 21.
Cocoanut Key is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Key West: highs come about 232 min and lows about 170 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1974 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is East Bahia Honda Key, 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 12 min later. For tidal currents, see Moser Channel, between Molasses and Pigeon Keys.
Predictions are based on Key West.
