About the tides at Cosmos Point

Cosmos Point has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Juneau, Gastineau Channel, Stephens Pass. The tide range here is very large, about 12.8 ft on average. Water can come in faster than you can walk across flats. Check the time before you go out. That is larger than most Alaska stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 22.5 ft. Neap tides follow today, when the range shrinks to 5.7 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 19.5 ft on December 24, and the lowest is −4.4 ft on July 5.

Cosmos Point is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Juneau, Gastineau Channel, Stephens Pass: highs come about 5 min and lows about 5 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1962 to 1997 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Dry Strait, 4 mi away, where high tide comes about 13 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Cosmos Point, 0.5 mile east of.

Predictions are based on Juneau, Gastineau Channel, Stephens Pass.
