About the tides at Fossil River entrance
Fossil River entrance has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Nome, Norton Sound. Water here rises and falls only about 0.9 ft on an average day. A strong onshore wind can push levels above the prediction. That is smaller than most Alaska stations on this site. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 1.5 ft, comes on October 30, and the smallest, 1.0 ft, on Sunday. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 2.4 ft on July 11 and bottom out at −0.4 ft on May 9.
Tides here are worked out from the reference station at Nome, Norton Sound, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. The nearest other station is Savoonga, 22 mi away, where high tide comes about 1 h 37 m earlier.
