About the tides at Gilgo Heading

Expect two roughly equal high tides a day at Gilgo Beach, each arriving about 50 minutes later than the day before. The pattern follows the reference station at Sandy Hook. The mean range is small, about 1.1 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. That is smaller than most New York stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 1.5 ft. Neap tides follow on Monday, when the range shrinks to 0.6 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 1.5 ft on August 2, and the lowest is −0.3 ft on January 23.

Gilgo Heading is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Sandy Hook: highs come about 142 min and lows about 178 min later than there. The nearest other station is Amityville, 3 mi away. For tidal currents, see Fire I. Inlet, 0.5 mi. S of Oak Beach.

Predictions are based on Sandy Hook.
