About the tides at Long Island
Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 0.8 ft. The pattern follows the reference station at Portland, casco Bay. The range is large, about 9.1 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 9.9 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 12.4 ft. Neap tides follow on Monday, when the range shrinks to 6.1 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 11.6 ft on December 25, and the lowest is −1.8 ft on January 23.
Long Island is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Portland, casco Bay: highs come about 1 min and lows about 1 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1979 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Vaill Island, 1 mi away, where high tide comes about 6 min later. For tidal currents, see Hussey Sound, Cow Island.
Predictions are based on Portland, casco Bay.
