About the tides at Newport
Newport has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. On a typical day the water moves about 3.5 ft between high and low. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 3.9 ft. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 4.9 ft on September 2 and bottom out at −0.8 ft on January 23.
A live NOAA gauge measures the water here, and predictions are calculated from this station's own records. It also reports water temperature, wind and air pressure. It was established in 1930. The nearest other station is West Jamestown, 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 14 min later. For tidal currents, see Rose Island, northeast of.
