About the tides at Prudence Island
Prudence Island has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Newport, Narragansett Bay. The average range is about 3.7 ft. Spring tides add a little more at both ends. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 4.1 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 5.3 ft on September 2, and the lowest is −0.9 ft on January 23.
Prudence Island is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Newport, Narragansett Bay: highs come about 8 min later and lows about 3 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1977 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Conanicut Point, 3 mi away. For tidal currents, see Dyer Island, west of.
Predictions are based on Newport, Narragansett Bay.
