About the tides at Piney Point

Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 0.1 ft. The pattern follows the reference station at Bar Pilots Dock, St Johns River. The mean range is small, about 0.9 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. That is smaller than most Florida stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 26, with a range of 1.1 ft. Neap tides follow on Sunday, when the range shrinks to 0.3 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 1.2 ft on October 27, and the lowest is −0.5 ft on January 23.

Piney Point is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Bar Pilots Dock, St Johns River: highs come about 159 min and lows about 216 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1978 to 1979 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is I-295 bridge (west end), 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 15 min later.
