About the tides at Plum Island Sound (south end)
Plum Island Sound (south end) has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The range is large, about 8.8 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. That is larger than most Massachusetts stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 9.5 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 11.7 ft. Neap tides follow on Sunday, when the range shrinks to 6.5 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 11.0 ft on July 6, and the lowest is −1.4 ft on January 23.
This is a prediction station. NOAA calculates its tides from past measurements at this spot, but there is no live gauge today. NOAA measured the tide here in 2010 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Essex, 5 mi away, where high tide comes about 5 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Plum Island Sound entrance.
