About the tides at Portland Head Light
Portland Head Light has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Portland, casco Bay. With a mean range of about 8.9 ft, the shoreline here changes a lot between high and low water. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 9.7 ft. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 11.2 ft on December 25 and bottom out at −1.8 ft on January 23.
Tides here are worked out from the reference station at Portland, casco Bay, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here in 1979 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Cushing Island, 2 mi away. For tidal currents, see Portland Harbor Entrance.
Predictions are based on Portland, casco Bay.
