About the tides at Sand Shoal Inlet (Coast Guard Station)
Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 0.9 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at Ocean City, Fishing Pier. On a typical day the water moves about 4.0 ft between high and low. That is larger than most Virginia stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 4.5 ft. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 5.8 ft on November 25 and bottom out at −1.1 ft on January 23.
Tides here are worked out from the reference station at Ocean City, Fishing Pier, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here from 1978 to 1981 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Great Machipongo Inlet (inside), 7 mi away, where high tide comes about 33 min later.
Predictions are based on Ocean City, Fishing Pier.
