About the tides at Shark Key

This is a mixed-tide station. Some days bring a deep low and a shallow low, and a few days have only one of each. The pattern follows the reference station at Key West. The mean range is small, about 0.7 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. That is smaller than most Florida stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 1.0 ft. The next spring tides peak on Monday, with a range of 1.1 ft. Neap tides follow on October 20, when the range shrinks to 0.6 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 1.3 ft on October 27, and the lowest is −0.3 ft on January 21.

Shark Key is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Key West: highs come about 18 min and lows about 111 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1973 to 1975 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Big Coppitt Key, 0.6 mi away, where high tide comes about 4 h 3 m later. For tidal currents, see Safe Habor Entrance, Stock Island.

Predictions are based on Key West.
