About the tides at South Bay entrance

South Bay entrance usually gets one high and one low tide a day, known as a diurnal tide. The pattern follows the reference station at PADRE ISLAND (south end). The mean range is small, about 1.1 ft, so wind and pressure can matter as much as the tide itself. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 1.3 ft. The next spring tides peak tomorrow, with a range of 2.2 ft. Neap tides follow on October 8, when the range shrinks to 0.7 ft.

South Bay entrance is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting PADRE ISLAND (south end): highs come about 14 min and lows about 21 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1991 to 1993 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Queen Isabella Causeway (west end), 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 38 min later. For tidal currents, see Laguna Madre Channel, SW end.

Predictions are based on PADRE ISLAND (south end).
