About the tides at South Hartford

Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 0.4 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at New London, Thames River. Water here rises and falls only about 1.9 ft on an average day. A strong onshore wind can push levels above the prediction. That is smaller than most Connecticut stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 2.3 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 2.4 ft, comes today, and the smallest, 1.5 ft, on October 19. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 2.7 ft on July 4 and bottom out at −0.4 ft on January 23.

Tides here are worked out from the reference station at New London, Thames River, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here in 1988 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Hartford, 1 mi away, where high tide comes about 6 min later. For tidal currents, see Hartford Jetty.

Predictions are based on New London, Thames River.

Tide predictions and water levels from NOAA CO-OPS. For planning only, not for navigation. Real water levels can differ because of wind, air pressure and river flow. Always check conditions on site.
