About the tides at Southwest Point
This is a mixed-tide station. Some days bring a deep low and a shallow low, and a few days have only one of each. On a typical day the water moves about 2.6 ft between high and low. That is smaller than most Rhode Island stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 3.0 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 3.5 ft, comes today, and the smallest, 1.5 ft, on October 18. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 3.8 ft on September 2 and bottom out at −0.8 ft on January 23.
Predictions for Southwest Point come from this station's own tide records. There is no live sensor, so the table shows forecast only. NOAA measured the tide here from 1998 to 2004 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Block Island (Old Harbor), 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 17 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Lewis Pt., 1.5 miles west of.
