About the tides at Steamboat Bay

This is a mixed-tide station. Some days bring a deep low and a shallow low, and a few days have only one of each. The pattern follows the reference station at Sitka. The range is large, about 8.2 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 10.3 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 11, with a range of 12.3 ft. Neap tides follow on Friday, when the range shrinks to 6.4 ft.

Steamboat Bay is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Sitka: highs come about 12 min and lows about 13 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1921 to 2006 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Anguilla Island, 11 mi away, where high tide comes about 6 min earlier.
