About the tides at Back River

Back River has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Portland, casco Bay. With a mean range of about 8.7 ft, the shoreline here changes a lot between high and low water. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 11.6 ft on December 25 and bottom out at −1.8 ft on January 23.

Tides here are worked out from the reference station at Portland, casco Bay, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. The nearest other station is Cross River entrance, 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 27 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Sheepscot River, off Barter Island.

Predictions are based on Portland, casco Bay.
