About the tides at Broad Bay Canal

Broad Bay Canal has a mixed tide. The two daily highs, and especially the two lows, can differ a lot in height. The pattern follows the reference station at Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Water here rises and falls only about 1.2 ft on an average day. A strong onshore wind can push levels above the prediction. That is smaller than most Virginia stations on this site. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 2.1 ft, comes on October 27, and the smallest, 0.6 ft, today. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 2.1 ft on September 30 and bottom out at −0.8 ft on January 23.

Tides here are worked out from the reference station at Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here from 1977 to 1978 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Long Creek, 0.5 mi away, where high tide comes about 50 min earlier.
