About the tides at Cape Lookout (ocean)
Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 0.9 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier. The average range is about 3.4 ft. Spring tides add a little more at both ends. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 3.9 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 5.3 ft. Neap tides follow today, when the range shrinks to 2.5 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 5.1 ft on November 25, and the lowest is −1.2 ft on January 23.
Cape Lookout (ocean) is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier: highs come about 22 min and lows about 22 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1978 to 1979 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Cape Lookout Bight, 0.7 mi away, where high tide comes about 5 min later. For tidal currents, see Middle Marshes, S of.
Predictions are based on Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier.
