About the tides at Hwy. 170 bridge

Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 0.8 ft. The pattern follows the reference station at Fort Pulaski, Savannah River. With a mean range of about 7.3 ft, the shoreline here changes a lot between high and low water. That is larger than most South Carolina stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 7.9 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 8.7 ft, comes today, and the smallest, 5.6 ft, on October 19. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 9.4 ft on October 27 and bottom out at −1.7 ft on January 23.

Tides here are worked out from the reference station at Fort Pulaski, Savannah River, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here from 1978 to 1982 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Chechessee Bluff, 4 mi away, where high tide comes about 15 min later. For tidal currents, see Broad River Bridge, S of, Broad River.

Predictions are based on Fort Pulaski, Savannah River.
