About the tides at Steep Brook
Steep Brook has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The pattern follows the reference station at Newport, Narragansett Bay. The average range is about 4.5 ft. Spring tides add a little more at both ends. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 4.9 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 6.4 ft on September 2, and the lowest is −1.1 ft on January 23.
Steep Brook is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Newport, Narragansett Bay: highs come about 26 min and lows about 5 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1977 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Fall River, 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 8 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Fall River entrance.
Predictions are based on Newport, Narragansett Bay.
