About the tides at Yale boathouse

Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 0.6 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at New London, Thames River. The average range is about 2.7 ft. Spring tides add a little more at both ends. That is smaller than most Connecticut stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 3.2 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 27, with a range of 4.1 ft. Neap tides follow today, when the range shrinks to 1.8 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 3.9 ft on July 3, and the lowest is −0.8 ft on January 23.

Yale boathouse is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting New London, Thames River: highs come about 14 min and lows about 10 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1989 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is New London, 4 mi away, where high tide comes about 14 min earlier. For tidal currents, see Allyn Point.

Predictions are based on New London, Thames River.
