About the tides at Norwich
Norwich has a mixed tide. The two daily highs, and especially the two lows, can differ a lot in height. The pattern follows the reference station at New London, Thames River. On a typical day the water moves about 3.0 ft between high and low. That is smaller than most Connecticut stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 3.6 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 4.5 ft, comes on October 27, and the smallest, 2.0 ft, today. Looking a year ahead, predictions peak at 4.3 ft on July 3 and bottom out at −0.8 ft on January 23.
Tides here are worked out from the reference station at New London, Thames River, with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here in 1989 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Yale boathouse, 6 mi away, where high tide comes about 10 min earlier.
