About the tides at Composite Island

Composite Island has a mixed tide. The two daily highs, and especially the two lows, can differ a lot in height. The pattern follows the reference station at Elfin Cove, Port Althorp. The tide range here is very large, about 13.7 ft on average. Water can come in faster than you can walk across flats. Check the time before you go out. That is larger than most Alaska stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 11, with a range of 20.2 ft. Neap tides follow on Sunday, when the range shrinks to 14.0 ft.

Composite Island is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Elfin Cove, Port Althorp: highs come about 45 min and lows about 51 min later than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1959 to 2009 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Wachusett Inlet, 9 mi away, where high tide comes about 6 min earlier.
