About the tides at Tarr Inlet

Tarr Inlet has a semidiurnal tide: two highs and two lows of similar height each day, about 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. The tide range here is very large, about 14.1 ft on average. Water can come in faster than you can walk across flats. Check the time before you go out. That is larger than most Alaska stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 16.8 ft. The next spring tides peak on October 11, with a range of 20.8 ft. Neap tides follow on Sunday, when the range shrinks to 12.7 ft.

This is a prediction station. NOAA calculates its tides from past measurements at this spot, but there is no live gauge today. NOAA measured the tide here in 2009 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Composite Island, 12 mi away.
