About the tides at Herring Bay

Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 1.3 ft. The pattern follows the reference station at Juneau. The tide range here is very large, about 11.1 ft on average. Water can come in faster than you can walk across flats. Check the time before you go out. That is larger than most Alaska stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on Sunday, with a range of 17.3 ft. Neap tides follow on October 17, when the range shrinks to 4.4 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 16.7 ft on December 24, and the lowest is −4.1 ft on July 5.

Herring Bay is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Juneau: highs come about 8 min and lows about 7 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here in 1996 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Eliza Harbor, 6 mi away.
