About the tides at Mad River Slough
Mad River Slough has a mixed tide. The two daily highs, and especially the two lows, can differ a lot in height. The pattern follows the reference station at HUMBOLDT BAY (North Spit). With a mean range of about 5.6 ft, the shoreline here changes a lot between high and low water. That is larger than most California stations on this site. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 7.6 ft. Over the next two weeks the biggest daily range, 9.0 ft, comes today, and the smallest, 4.1 ft, on Friday.
Tides here are worked out from the reference station at HUMBOLDT BAY (North Spit), with NOAA time and height corrections. Times are good for planning, but local wind can shift them. NOAA measured the tide here from 1977 to 1980 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is Arcata Wharf, 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 5 min later.
