About the tides at Sturgeon Island
Tides here follow a regular twice-daily rhythm. The two daily highs usually differ by only 0.5 ft. The pattern follows the reference station at Portland, casco Bay. The range is large, about 5.1 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. That is smaller than most Maine stations on this site. The next spring tides peak on October 28, with a range of 7.2 ft. Neap tides follow on Monday, when the range shrinks to 4.0 ft. In the next 12 months the highest predicted tide here is 6.7 ft on December 25, and the lowest is −1.1 ft on January 23.
Sturgeon Island is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Portland, casco Bay: highs come about 120 min and lows about 124 min later than there. The nearest other station is Androscoggin River entrance, 3 mi away, where high tide comes about 24 min later. For tidal currents, see Merrymeeting Bay, N of Chops Pass., Kennebec River.
Predictions are based on Portland, casco Bay.
