About the tides at Shakan Strait

Tides here are mixed. On average the two daily highs differ by 1.5 ft, so check which low is the lower one before you head out. The pattern follows the reference station at Sitka. The range is large, about 9.3 ft on average. Flats and bars appear and vanish quickly, so keep an eye on the time. From the average lower low to the average higher high, the difference is 11.5 ft. The next spring tides peak today, with a range of 13.6 ft. Neap tides follow on Friday, when the range shrinks to 7.5 ft.

Shakan Strait is a subordinate station. NOAA predicts its tides by adjusting Sitka: highs come about 7 min and lows about 10 min earlier than there. NOAA measured the tide here from 1955 to 1998 to set up these predictions. The nearest other station is El Capitan Passage, Dry Pass, 2 mi away, where high tide comes about 9 min later.
